Aims & Objectives

Aims

This package is aimed at enabling health care individuals to develop the underpinning knowledge associated in obtaining an accurate standard 12 lead electrocardiogram (ECG) recording from a patient. Factors which influence accuracy and effective use of equipment are explored to ensure optimum quality recording.

Learning Outcomes

The intended learning outcomes are that on completion of this package the student should be able to:

  • Describe the indications for undertaking a 12-lead ECG.
  • Describe the procedure for acquiring a 12-lead ECG, including preparation of the patient and equipment.
  • Acknowledge issues related to dignity, culture and consent in 12-lead ECG acquisition.
  • Recognise factors influencing acquisition and safety when recording a 12-lead ECG.

The contents of this package reflect the current clinical guidelines.
